Down By The River
This fascinating account of
life, work and leisure on the Thames and Kennet in Reading was inspired
by the author’s own childhood ‘down by the river’ in
Caversham.
The book is attractively designed,
thoroughly researched, and generously provided with maps, drawings, and
contemporary photographs, many not seen before. The author writes with
local people in mind and her book will be of interest to local and family
historians, as well as those with an interest in river activities.
Gillian Clark was born in Caversham and grew up in a boat-building family.
Childhood was for swimming and boating, parents taking the view, like
the father of Arthur Ransome’s Swallows, that ‘if not duffers,
won’t drown’. She holds a PhD for her historical work, edited
the Berkshire Record Society’s first publication and also contributed
to An Historical Atlas of Berkshire.
