Eldorado

Forty days in an open boat
......drifting in the gas green wilderness,
carnivale – farewell, farewell –
......the whole crew fighting to put
the beach back into the thermos
......(Balbec, Salcombe),
the ocean back into the woods
......where rocking gently you might
begin again, berceuse, hearts
......of oak, a house in the forest.

What lies ahead’s impossible - dwindling
......provisions, the mud-choked delta.
From here ascend the Orinoco,
......rising again through shrieking trees
into Arcadia, the world turned
......upside down, Cockaigne
which now begins to look a lot
......like home. There is no gold.
